
taken to a screen where they can click through images and descriptions of the area; if they like what they see and select it, they get taken to a Google Earth view of the region, which they can progressively zoom in on.
At the end of this journey, users are asked to choose a specific piece of the ocean (i.e. a specific GPS coordinate self-defined by clicking on the map) that they will be personally responsible for defending against climate change and other threats. When they choose their personal preserve, a form comes up asking them what steps he/she is taking (or is going to take) to fulfill their promise.
Once a pledge has been made, the user's spot in the ocean is permanently marked for others to see (and explore). Anyone coming to the same habitat can click on anyone else's preserve (each piece of ocean, once claimed and pledged, is marked on the map with a small cube) and see what others are doing or promising to do to help. The right border of the screen of every habitat is filled from top to bottom with pledges as well (including those of experts in the field) to help inspire new users to the task. In short,
